The idea for our Driver Training Academy started in early 2023, inspired by the successful training model used within the SITRA Group.
At the time, we could see many of our experienced drivers approaching retirement, with the next Driver CPC deadline adding to the risk of a future skills gap. At the same time, we were receiving more applications from newly qualified drivers, largely thanks to the Government-backed bootcamp scheme.
This presented a clear opportunity. Working together, our Driver Training and HR teams developed the Driver Training Academy to provide new drivers with high-quality support from day one — especially those entering the logistics industry for the first time.
The Academy focuses on delivering some of the best bulk tanker training available in the UK and officially launched in January 2025.
The Academy is based at our Bromborough warehousing site (on the Wirral peninsula), which allows great access to our North West operations and also makes it accessible to drivers travelling from the South too.
Every new driver who joins Abbey spends their first week at the Driver Training Academy. It’s an important time for them to learn more about the business, meet the training teams and build a good relationship with the company.
The first week is classed as intensive bulk tanker training. All areas of the driver’s role are covered, from vehicle checks to discharge procedures. We deliver training for all necessary accreditations, including FORS, SCOPA and TASCC, from day one.
Once the new starters have successfully completed week one, they are assigned a lead driver who will continue their training on-the-job, introducing them to our customers and our different product types.
The average training time for successful sign-off of a new employee entering the Academy is three weeks, while a follow-up assessment is conducted within three months.
Since its launch in January this year, the Academy has welcomed 80 new drivers, 90% of whom have been successfully signed off as safe, capable bulk tanker operators.
It’s been a significant investment in time, people and resources, from the trainers to a new upgraded training facility, and it’s already showing strong results. We’ve seen an increase in driver retention and received positive feedback from those who’ve completed the courses. The structured support helps drivers feel well-equipped from day one, which naturally boosts their confidence and performance on the job.
The Academy is not just a starting point for drivers beginning their Abbey career. Abbey Logistics is an approved DVLA/JAUPT training centre with nine approved Driver CPC courses (International), so the space is also used for the delivery of these. In addition, we deliver internal and external employee training and host accreditation from the Academy too.
